The Board of Education of the Merced City School District, Merced, California, is seeking a highly qualified, fully certified, educational leader to serve as Superintendent. The Board wishes to have the successful candidate assume the responsibilities of the position on a date to be determined.
McPherson & Jacobson, L.L.C., Executive Recruitment and Development, in collaboration with the California School Boards Association, has been engaged as the consultant in a search for outstanding candidates. They will assist the Superintendent in identifying and screening the candidates.

The Qualifications
The candidate must have the background, skills, and abilities essential for excellence in educational leadership. The Board recognizes that selecting a superintendent is one of the most important decisions it will make. The Board developed the following desired characteristics.
ETHICAL LEADER
The superintendent has the moral compass and courage to act upon all decisions through an equity, diversity, and inclusivity lens. The superintendent is an ethical leader with a strong personal work ethic who leads by example, expecting high performance standards for self, staff, and students. A leader who is visionary, courageous, and innovative with the ability and passion to effectively interact with all educational partners. This candidate must be trustworthy, transparent, visible at the school and in the community, inclusive, approachable, and friendly. This candidate must be open, and willing to hear opinions from all stakeholders, whether they are staff, parents, students, or community members -- especially when gathering input for solving critical situations or addressing criticism.
EDUCATIONAL LEADER
A leader who is an effective educator who is visionary, innovative, and student centered in their commitment to student excellence and achievement. A leader who knows best practices in teaching and learning, able to implement effective curriculum and instruction, assist in the selection of purposeful professional development, and employ systems of assessment that will result in increased achievement for all students. The leader must be a continuous learner themselves and support professional development for everyone in the district.
LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
A leader who is fiscally responsible and has demonstrated fiscal and operational expertise ensuring consistent application of administrative policy, and the ability to implement long-range plans that benefit students yet stay within the district’s approved budget guidelines. A leader who is an accountable problem solver who has the ability to understand and implement solutions to complex issues of California school finance, education law, collective bargaining, and strategic planning. This leader has the ability to keep the Governing Board apprised of district strengths, weaknesses, and problems, and to recommend priority tasks for alleviation of identified weaknesses. This leader is a trailblazer who promotes creativity and innovation and is not afraid to take risks.
COMMUNICATOR AND A COLLABORATOR
A leader who is a team builder able to create a workplace environment that fosters creativity and will inspire the team and the district to reach out and achieve. The leader listens to and thinks about others first before stating their opinions, has strong verbal, written, and digital communication skills and is accessible to all, including those with differing opinions. This is accomplished by establishing trusting, transparent, inclusive, and respectful relationships with the Board, administration, staff, students, and the community
Additional Desired Skills - Preferred skill requirements
Experience as a site principal or school leadership equivalent to a principal
Bilingual or Multi-lingual
Has had California administrative experience.
