The Washington County Board of Education of Washington County, Maryland is seeking a highly qualified and fully certified Superintendent.  Washington County Public Schools is located in Western Maryland, as part of the tri-state area that includes nearby Pennsylvania and West Virginia. More than 22,000 students attend 46 school facilities, administered by nearly 2,500 employees, making WCPS the third largest employer in Washington County. The Board wishes to have the successful candidate assume the responsibilities of the position on or before July 1, 2022.

McPherson & Jacobson, L.L.C., Executive Recruitment and Development has been engaged as the consultant in a search for outstanding candidates. They will assist the School Board in identifying and screening the candidates.

Enrollment: 22,000

Location: Western Maryland

Salary:  Regionally competitive salary based upon experience and qualifications

The Qualifications

The candidate must have the background, skills, and abilities essential for excellence in educational leadership. The board recognizes that selecting a superintendent is one of the most important decisions it will make. Experience as a superintendent or central office leadership position working in a similarly sized district with a large budget and similar demographics to Washington County required.  Doctorate is preferred.  Maryland certification required.  The Board developed the following desired characteristics: 

  1. An educational leader who is guided by what is best for all students: cognitively, socially, physically and emotionally and is a servant leader with a good sense of humor. 

  2. A visible leader who will represent Washington County Public Schools throughout the county and understands the need to advocate vigorously on behalf of the district in order to procure the resources necessary to effectively support the district’s operating budget.

  3. A calm, caring, rational delegator who is also a transparent communicator and one who leads with a moral compass as well as proven, effective, and respected leadership skills.

  4. A proven educational leader who is approachable and leads by example, inspires and motivates staff, is a great communicator, and has a track record of engaging employee groups in a collaborative and positive manner. 

  5. An intelligent leader who will listen before making change, but who also possesses the ability to effectively lead change as well as one who will build upon the successes of the district and has a history of engaging the community and promoting active stakeholder involvement. 

  6. An educational leader who demonstrates an understanding of the clear role of the superintendent as well as the role of an elected board of education and is respectful of those roles.

  • Closing date for applications: May 5, 2022 (11:30 p.m. central time)

  • School Board selects finalists to interview: Week of May 23, 2022

  • Finalists Interviews with the School Board: Week of May 30, 2022

  • Selection of new Superintendent: End of May/first week of June 2022

  • Start date: July 1, 2022
