Qualifications:

  1. Master’s degree or degree in education/administration from an accredited college or university.

  2. Valid teaching and administrative certificate issued by the State of Arizona.

  3. Appropriate administrative and teaching experience in public schools.

  4. Knowledge and experience in development and execution of educational programs including federal, state, locally and privately funded projects.

  5. Have good rapport in staff relations and supervision.  Able to communicate ideas, programs etc., to individuals and/or groups.

  6. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the superintendent may fine appropriate and acceptable.

Function:

The Director of Special Education shall provide leadership in the development, implementation and coordination of the district’s special education services.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Implements appropriate and uniform procedures for identification, evaluation and placement of special education students.

  2. Assist in formulating and implementing a district-wide operating budget for the special education services.

  3. Assist in recruiting, interviewing, and recommending for employment qualified applicants for special education positions.

  4. Assists in planing and supervising the orientation program for new teachers.

  5. Inform the principals of progress in the implementation of all special education services programs.

  6. Develop all federal and state project applications for submission in a timely manner according to goals and objectives.

  7. Implement and monitor federal and state guidelines for special education.

  8. Assist in reviewing and evaluating results of district-wide testing programs and other evaluative measures used by schools.

  9. Develop and maintain lines of communication between special education service staff, regular program staff, parents and other agencies.

  10. Recommend tuition contracts for private school placements.

  11. Coordinate transportation needs for special education students.

  12. Plan, implement and evaluate staff development activities related to the improvement of instruction and / or delivery of services to exceptional children.

  13. Develop and coordinate the integration of state standards into the special education programs.

  14. Effectively respond to written and oral requests for information in a timely manner.

  15. Support the ethics and policies of the school district as adopted by the governing board.

  16. Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services.

Responsible to: The Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services

Term of employment: Twelve-month year.  Salary as determined by the administrative salary schedule as approved by the governing board.

Evaluation: Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the governing board policy on evaluation of administrative personnel.
