The Opportunity

At Transcend, we work with communities around the country who have high aspirations for their students’ learning and want support in achieving their vision. We support their vision through a data-grounded approach so that we can design better, more equitable schools so that all young people can thrive. This requires us to use evidence to innovate and continuously improve. Evidence includes insights from students’ and community members’ lived experiences, academic research, quantitative data, learnings from piloting, etc. We recognize that there are many ways to “know” something and honor that in our processes. As a Learning Engineer, you will lead teams through the process of getting and using evidence in the Learn, Envision, Build, Try Cycle, in service of liberatory schooling innovation and continuous improvement. You will do this by accessing existing research and practice, supporting school communities to set up and measure rapid-cycle pilots to try out something new, and evaluating programs that are further along in their evolution.

Who You Are

You are an endlessly curious person, with a passion for data and a scientific mind. You value evidence-based decision-making and have the confidence to test out early and possibly imperfect ideas with users. You constantly probe for why things work the way they do and how they could work better, and you feel triumphant when you’ve found data-backed solutions that can be implemented. You have a way of getting others as excited and curious about their data as you are and value the importance of making meaning with others from various perspectives. Your approach to continuous improvement leaves people feeling energized rather than evaluated. Other people know they can come to you to take their big ideas from ideation to testable hypotheses to smooth implementation!

Additionally, you bring the following key skills, interests, and knowledge:

  • Experience in teaching and learning, and/or managing continuous improvement processes in educational settings.

  • Analytical and inquiry skills and an ability to pull together effective assessments, surveys, or interviews that answer questions and help educators rapidly learn and improve their practice.

  • Experience working with populations diverse in terms of race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects that move quickly; and can multitask and prioritize effectively.

  • Proficiencies in a variety of word processing and communications software (e.g., Google docs, PowerPoint) and data analysis (e.g., Excel).

Lastly, you love that your everyday work is in service to a mission that matters. You believe deeply in the power of education to change lives and elevate voices that have been marginalized for too long and can’t wait to contribute your love of data and facilitation to help communities make radical changes to reinvent schools in America.

To all of this, you also bring:

  • A commitment to Transcend’s mission of transforming education, with a passion for creating extraordinary and equitable learning environments.

  • A people-first orientation and thoughtfulness around supporting others better understand and maximize data.

  • A deep commitment to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion in your approach to data collection and analysis.
