Comprehensive School Safety Coordinator

Classification: Classified

FLSA Status: Exempt (less than full-time status may result in non-exempt status)

Salary Range: Schedule III, Range 4 ($63,500.80-$71,526.40)

Summary: 

In accordance with RCW 28A.310.510, and under the general direction of the Director of Behavioral Health and  Prevention Services, the Comprehensive School Safety Coordinator is responsible for providing leadership in comprehensive school safety planning, otherwise referred to as Emergency Operations Planning (EOP).  

Essential Functions: 

• Provide training and consultation to school teams regarding equitable safe schools planning, school safety, and security training.

• Facilitate appropriate and trauma-informed plans for crisis and emergency response and recovery.

• Provide real-time support and assistance for school districts in crisis. Offer information, technical assistance, and best practices in responding to school emergencies.

• Planning, coordination, and/or delivery of other school district staff training related to school safety issues, to maximize quality professional learning.

• Development and planning of comprehensive safety (EOP) plan for districts and schools.

• Provide technical assistance for the implementation of equitable and specific safety programs to districts and schools.

• Assist districts in determining cost efficiencies for district-wide and site-based safety efforts.

• Provide training and guidance to local school districts and staff on equitable school safety practices. Depending on the assessed needs of a district or school, training might cover such topics as NIMS/ICS, HIB, digital safety, hazing, earthquake-lahar-tsunami preparedness, SROs, trafficking, pandemics, HazMat, reunification planning, and other safety issues which may arise.

• Attend and facilitate school safety meetings at client districts as necessary and in alignment with program goals.

• Assist in the collection of required data on school safety.

• Respond to a variety of inquiries from client districts regarding the appropriate implementation of school safety measures.

• Identify and make available a wide variety of materials including safety plans, budgets, reports, analyses, recommendations, and safety procedures necessary to implement plans.

• Develop and maintain relationships with district contacts, safety vendors, and consultants.

• Pursue ongoing professional development on the latest school safety practices and protocols by attending conferences, individual reading, and research.

• Coordinate with colleagues at OSPI, other ESDs, and outside agencies.

• Make presentations and attend meetings and conferences as appropriate.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities: 

• Knowledge of and skill in using Microsoft Office products and database software.

• Knowledge of strategies used in adult education and training, and skill in effectively delivering training to adult learners.

• Knowledge of grants and associated requirements.

• Knowledge of pertinent codes, policies, regulations, laws, agencies, and resources.

• Knowledge of school safety policies, protocols, procedures, and practices.

• Knowledge of trauma-informed messaging and systems.

• Knowledge and understanding of equity within educational systems.

• Skill in using Microsoft Office Software.

• Ability to deal with obstacles and constraints positively.

• Ability to adjust to and utilize new approaches in the performance of his/her duties.

• Ability and willingness to seek out and take advantage of opportunities for professional growth.

• Ability to review and interpret technical information.

• Ability to write technical materials.

• Ability to analyze situations to define issues and draw meaningful conclusions.

• Ability to be trained in the use of the Salem-Keizer Threat Assessment Model.

Qualifications: 

Bachelor’s Degree in related field and 3 years of experience working in education. Master’s Degree in School  Administration, Behavioral Health, or Clinical Social Work preferred. Experience as a program administrator is required. Training in threat assessment and emergency operations planning is preferred. Experience working with multi-cultural groups, and a familiarity with local area agencies and resources preferred. Valid driver’s license and proof of liability insurance required. WSP/FBI criminal history background clearance required. 

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements: 

Work is performed primarily in an office environment; however, travel is required for the school district and other agency visits, training sessions, workshops, and other committee representation. Lifts and carries a maximum of  40 pounds. Sitting for extended periods of time may be required. Adequate manual and finger dexterity, hearing,  speech, and vision are necessary to perform the essential functions of this position. 

Hazards: Potential hazards are presently based on the fact that the position requires the incumbent to drive a  significant amount. Hazards may include but are not limited to traveling alone, driving in inclement weather conditions, varied road conditions, rush hour traffic, etc.
