The Kentucky Board of Education is seeking a highly qualified and experienced leader to serve as Commissioner of Education. The Board wishes to have the successful candidate assume the responsibilities of the position not later than July 1, 2024.

McPherson & Jacobson, L.L.C., Executive Recruitment and Development has been engaged as the consultant in a search for outstanding candidates. They will assist the Board of Education in identifying and screening the candidates.

Location: Frankfort, Kentucky

The Qualifications

The Kentucky Board of Education is specifically seeking a candidate with the following characteristics:

Experience

  • Knowledge of Kentucky’s public school system and the broader educational landscape within the Commonwealth.

  • Successful experience as a student-focused educator and educational leader with an understanding of the challenges and opportunities our state presents.

  • A deep understanding of learning theory, curriculum and instructional practice. Accomplished professional with a proven track record in managerial roles, demonstrating exceptional leadership skills, strategic vision, and the ability to inspire and guide teams towards achieving organizational excellence.

Skills

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills with the ability to engage diverse statewide stakeholders in the planning and implementation of programs designed to improve opportunities and outcomes for ALL Kentucky children. This will include listening to the voices of students, teachers, families and communities.

  • The ability to work collaboratively and inclusively with the Board of Education, state educational partners, the Kentucky General Assembly, and school district leadership in developing and implementing the strategic goals for the state.

Supporting Dispositions

  • A commitment to and passion for inspiring each student for a successful life and improving learning opportunities for historically underserved children.

  • A dedication to maintaining a visible and approachable presence while exemplifying dignified leadership.

Salary: Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Search Timeline:

  • Interview committee identifies subset of candidates: March 7, 2024

  • Virtual interviews and finalists identified: March 8, 2024

  • Finalist interviews: March 18-19, 2024
