The Montgomery County Board of Education (Board) seeks an exceptional, visionary leader to become the next Superintendent of Schools, effective July 1, 2024.
Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), located in Maryland’s suburbs to the north of Washington, D.C., is among the 20 largest school systems in the United States, serving more than 160,000 students in 211 schools. MCPS is committed to a collaborative approach to ensuring student success by addressing disparities in student outcomes by closing gaps in opportunity and achievement for all students. According to WalletHub’s recent rankings, four of the 10 most diverse cities in the country are located in Montgomery County. Approximately 32% of Montgomery County residents hold post-graduate degrees, the highest percentage among residents over 25 years of age in the nation. Drawing on the deep talent pool, Montgomery County is also home to major federal agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, as well as the headquarters of Marriott International and a growing life sciences industry. The composition of the school system’s student population reflects the surrounding communities in its significant racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and linguistic diversity. To meet students’ range of needs and interests, the district has approximately 25,000 employees with an annual operating budget of $3.2 billion.
The Board of Education (Board) oversees the work of the Superintendent and the school system. Comprising eight members, the Board is the policy-making body responsible for the oversight and general strategic direction of the school system. The Superintendent is appointed by the Board and serves as its executive officer and secretary-treasurer. The Superintendent is responsible for the overall administration of the school system and recommends appropriate action to the Board.
