Valley Stream Central High School District

The Valley Stream Central High School District (VSCHSD) is seeking an outstanding leader to be our next superintendent of schools.

The VSCHSD is a diverse public school district located in Nassau County, an easy drive or train ride away from New York City. The district serves the major portion of Valley Stream, most of North Valley Stream and parts of Elmont, Franklin Square, Lynbrook and Malverne. The district, one of only three in New York State that covers grades 7-12 exclusively and serves approximately 4,600 students, operates one junior high school, one senior high school, and two combined junior and senior high schools. Students enter the district’s secondary schools after graduating from one of the 10 schools maintained by Elementary Districts 13, 24 and 30, whose combined outer boundaries are coterminous with the boundary of the High School District. The district is governed by a nine-member Board of Education composed of appointees from each of the elementary district boards.

Our mission is to cultivate curiosity and a passion for learning by providing challenging educational opportunities for all students so they can achieve their full potential as productive and contributing members of society. We believe in putting students first, always. We believe in inspiring and challenging our students through a curriculum that encourages them to create, and problem-solve, to know that they are each smart in different ways, to promote deep thinking, and to anchor and launch future learning. Each year, we create a new plan to guide us and work toward the goals of our overarching 5-year SUCCESS plan.

The VSCHSD is home to some truly impressive schools and programs, including its newly-created Twilight Program. The Twilight Alternative Program provides students who would benefit from a non-traditional academic setting an alternative learning environment in the late afternoon to evening. This is a Regents-based program that gives high school students in our District the essential tools to succeed and complete their high school academic requirements in this unique program or eventually return to their home high school to complete their degree.

The VSCHSD is also proud of its Wellness Centers, which opened In each of our schools in September 2021, to support the health and wellbeing of students and their families. The purpose of the wellness centers is two-fold; to provide student/family access to school counselors, social workers, and psychologists after school hours and to proactively focus on wellness and well-being with our students through a variety of activities, groups, and partnerships. Each month will focus on a different theme to support the academic, social, and emotional needs of the students.
