Director of K-12 and Teacher Education

Full-time Remote

Do you want to join a dedicated team working to create an equitable, humane, and healthy world? The Institute for Humane Education (IHE) is a non-profit headquartered in Surry, ME. Our mission is to educate people to create a world where all people, animals, and nature can thrive. We’re looking to hire a Director of K-12 and Teacher Education who will work remotely to significantly expand the number and diversity of schools, classrooms, and educational organizations using our Solutionary Framework, and who will support educators in their efforts to promote learning that engages students in developing ethical and systemic solutions to the problems they are seeing in their communities and world.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of K-12 and Teacher Education will oversee development of curriculum resources; present about humane education at workshops and conferences; cultivate relationships with schools and organizations nationally and worldwide; and develop a cadre of coaches to support educators in their practical implementation of learning that prepares young people to be solutionaries – and the next caretakers of our planet.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Expand the network of schools and districts using IHE’s solutionary approach by working closely with local, national, and international associations of educational leaders; presenting at conferences; reaching out to educational media; and introducing curriculum designers to the Solutionary Framework.

  • Oversee the development of curricular materials and other resources that will guide teachers in their implementation of the Solutionary Framework across grade levels and subject areas.

  • Oversee the development of a cadre of coaches who can provide virtual and in-person support for teachers and school leaders implementing the Solutionary Framework.

  • Explore the possibilities of implementing the Solutionary Framework beyond the traditional classroom through structures such as afterschool programs, clubs, camps, and service organizations.

  • Write grant proposals and help to oversee their implementation.

  • Contribute creatively and thoughtfully to the advancement of our strategic goals as a member of the IHE leadership team.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • A deep and demonstrated commitment to comprehensive humane education that connects the issues of human rights, environmental sustainability, and animal protection.

  • A deep and demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and the ability to build a culture and curriculum based on that commitment.

  • A minimum of five years experience as a school and/or district administrator.

  • Experience in developing and implementing curriculum across multiple grade levels and content areas.

  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate workshops and professional development for educators.

  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills.

  • Experience in writing and managing grants.

  • Ability to engage in big-picture, strategic thinking matched by the practical management of implementation.

  • Experience coaching, mentoring, and inspiring staff.

You…

  • enjoy brainstorming and collaborating with others in a creative environment and welcome feedback without defensiveness.

  • are diligent and organized, with the ability to consistently complete tasks today while keeping an eye on long-term strategy.

  • are compassionate and committed to social justice, animal protection, and environmental sustainability.

  • are eager to meet new people, forge new networks, and make connections that will lead to a greater number and diversity of schools using our resources.
