Superintendent of Schools

Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates is assisting the School Board of the Ames, Iowa Community School District as it seeks a dynamic leader as their next superintendent of schools.

Located in Ames, IA, the home of Iowa State University, the Ames CSD is regarded as one of Iowa’s premier school districts.  Guided by its mission, the “Ames CSD commits to equity and access that empowers every individual to reach their full personal and educational potential.” More than 4,800 students are enrolled in district schools, including the preschool center, five elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school.  The district employs a high caliber and dedicated staff of 712 with 51% of teachers have earned an advanced degree.

The Ames CSD promotes an educational environment that is racially, ethnically, linguistically, and culturally diverse to broaden students’ academic experience and to enrich the district.   Ames CSD schools give students a personalized learning experience from their first day of preschool until graduation.  A district that is large enough to provide an internationally competitive education – based on programming and activities enriched by community connections and infused with a variety of cultures – yet the district is small enough for each student to find a niche.

With three rebuilt and two newly remodeled elementary schools, a state-of-the-art middle school, and a high school rated as the number one public school in Iowa (U.S. News and World Reports), the Ames CSD provides a learning environment for students to master the academic and social-emotional skills, strategies, and concepts to prepare them for a lifetime.   Numerous accolades abound in the high performing Ames High School, among them:  15 Presidential scholars in the school’s history, 80 National Merit Scholar finalists in the last five years, 23 straight State Science Olympiad Championships, 115 All-State musicians in the last five years, 15% of all All-State artists and the most athletic state championships of any school in Iowa.

Teaching and learning in the Ames schools guide students to be actively engaged in discovering their own knowledge through each stage of advancement. By collaborating and sharing with their peers, students experience learning that is authentic and challenging.  Using the Iowa Core and local learning standards, teachers adjust strategies to help each student meet or exceed expectations.  Student achievement is consistently above state averages, characterizing a high-performing school culture.  Teacher leadership initiatives provide mentors, instructional coaches, and professional development.  A 1:1 technology program supports student-centered learning across all grades.

With an annual budget of $128M, the district provides abundant resources for learning.  The district is in the process of facilities upgrades for 21st Century learning.  The community supported a $55 million school bond issue in 2012 to rebuild or remodel all five elementary schools.  A new $110 million Ames High School, now under construction, will bring a future-ready, state-of-the-art learning facility to the community by August 2022.
