The next superintendent of the Harrisburg School District will be expected to:

  • Collaborate, engage and communicate clearly with all stakeholders in the district and the community.

  • Have an aptitude for working in a culturally diverse community.

  • Promote a comprehensive public relations program for the district and have been successfully involved in public and press relations.

  • Encourage staff and community feedback in decision-making; use participatory decision-making processes where appropriate.

  • Integrate research data into the decision-making (policy) process.

  • Collaborate and partner with the Court Appointed Receiver and elected School Board, demonstrating the knowledge and resource collection skills that contribute to governance discussions as the Board’s chief systems advisor.

  • Lead the implementation of the District’s Amended Recovery Plan to ensure that initiatives, action plans and goals are achieved. 

  • Assess areas of district improvement in all support service areas, and then oversee major district initiatives – both educationally and operationally – and address the challenges, issues and needs inherent in such projects.

  • Lead with firm but personal interactions, compromise when necessary, and demonstrate capacity to work with a multitude of opinions and viewpoints.

  • Possess strong skills in school finance, budgeting and cost-effectiveness strategies while able to evaluate the budgetary impact of district initiatives, especially in today’s environment of limited resources.

Salary is negotiable and will be competitive, based on training and experience, qualifications and meeting board criteria including but not limited to the skills listed above.  PA Superintendent’s Letter of Eligibility or alternative Commission Qualification Letter is required.
