Nyack Union Free School District

Rockland County, New York | www.nyackschools.org

The Nyack Union Free School District encompasses eight square miles of beautifully diverse culture and community located along the banks of the Hudson River, twenty miles north of mid-Manhattan, just over the Tappan Zee Bridge. A primarily residential location in the lower Hudson Valley region of Rockland County, Nyack's approximately 23,000 residents live in six villages and hamlets: Central Nyack, Nyack, South Nyack, Upper Grandview, Upper Nyack and Valley Cottage. The school district is made up of three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school with a combined enrollment of approximately 2800.

The District is distinguished not only by proximity to New York City but also by the charming downtown area of shops, restaurants and local businesses; vibrant venues for music, visual and performing arts; and a multitude of park lands and hiking trails in a geographically picturesque location. The District proudly serves an involved and unique school community. Nyack's abundant blend of races, cultures, religions and socio-economic groups form a population mix that is both a genuine source of pride and valuable educational resource. A strong belief in community strengthens a district-wide network for building trust, investing in a common vision and ultimately shaping a dynamic future for students, families, staff and residents. The district vision for embedding equity, innovation and optimism in an authentic learning environment for each student is rooted in a moral imperative that spans across decades of work towards becoming a multi-cultural, anti-racist, equity-driven school community.

This district is Nyack-Strong and RedHawks-Proud for many reasons, highlighting the following:

  • A Strategic Plan and Policy for Excellence Through Racial Equity, implemented in June 2020 as a living document to extend an organizational journey and timeline of work.

  • An extraordinary faculty, staff and administration dedicated to the uniqueness and richness of Nyack Public Schools.

  • A Profile of a Graduate aligned to seven core competencies: Critical Thinking, Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, Compassion, Content Mastery, Cultural Responsiveness.

  • Curriculum and Instruction that is deeply grounded in forward movement, committed to excellence in education for each student while actively pursuing necessary changes to bridge disparities and opportunity gaps that systemically exist.

  • Administrative goals, strategies and aspirational outcomes informed by two perpetual questions: How well are we preparing each student for a rapidly changing and increasingly complex world? How well are we meeting the needs of each student?

  • A robust Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Program for K-12 supported by Pupil Personnel Services, Guidance and School Counseling Providers focussed on wellness in success. Bilingual elementary social workers and counselors are in each building.

  • A vested interest in embedding diversity and inclusion beyond a department to grow a safe, welcoming and respectful learning environment for all students, faculty and staff.

  • STREAM (Science, Technology, Research, Arts, Mathematics) emphasis provides a world of exploration for coding, robotics, biomedical innovations, engineering designs & developments, forensics, conceptual physics, music composition to name a few.

  • LATI (Learner-Activated Technology-Infused) Classrooms promote integrated, collaborative and transformational teaching and learning led by highly trained teachers with long-standing commitments and expertise in this concept.

  • New Global Learning Commons, fully renovated, state-of-the-art libraries transformed into maker-spaces in all five schools.

  • A District Technology Plan provides 1:1 computer devices for 100% of students, K-12.

  • An historically celebrated Visual and Performing Arts commitment that reflects the “Art and Soul” on the Hudson, spanning across classes, enrichment opportunities, clubs and events for students to hone skills and talents.

  • Award-winning athletic fields with stunning views of the Hudson and the Hook; voted best in region, 2018, the Athletic Program boasts strong tradition of excellence in sports and academics with 17 Scholar Athlete Teams and Volleyball League Champions, 2021.

  • Five Family Resource Centers facilitate critical connections between families, students and staff. Community Liaisons specialize in outreach with families whose first language is Spanish or Haitian Creole, the two additionally predominant languages.

  • A district that is consistently recognized among Top 100 Best Districts with Overall “A” Rating in New York and nationally measured by the U.S. News and World Report and Newsweek; 2021 Top 5% Most Diverse in NY State and Top 20% Best Places to Teach.

The Leadership Opportunity:

The Nyack Union Free School District’s history, demography and diversity offers a unique narrative, challenging trajectory and investigation into the impact of systems on student success. Because the Nyack/Valley Cottage school community is truly a microcosm of the United States, there are challenges as well as opportunities that naturally exist to bring a vision for equity, innovation and optimism to fruition. The Board of Education is seeking a highly motivated, visionary and educational leader who has demonstrated experience in organizational and transformational leadership; is committed to operationalizing systemic equity; and champions a climate that uplifts and unifies the school community.
